29 Nov Sport WHISTLE launch event in UK
29/11/2018. Project Sport WHISTLE was publicly launched in Sheffield on November 29th in the context of the 2nd Sheffield Forum for Clean Sports organized by Dr Lambros Lazuras from Sheffield Hallam University. The event was well attended by student athletes and representatives from TASS (Talented Athletes Scholarship Scheme), professional coaches, representatives of the GB Weightlifting, Public Health directors and specialists from Doncaster and Sheffield city councils. The delegates recognized the added value of project SPORT WHISTLE and discussed ways to embed whistleblowing mechanisms and processes in their sport. They also identified key areas for policy intervention that would facilitate athletes and sport stakeholders’ engagement with safe and effective whistleblowing practices.
Prof Lazuras presented the values of whistleblowing irregularities in sport by talks, interactive activities, and hands-on experience about:
- The role of whistleblowing against harmful irregularities in sports, such as sexual harassment, doping and match fixing.
- Insights from athletes, coaches and other sport professionals from 7 countries about whistleblowing.
- The web-based educational resources of SPORT WHISTLE (https://sportwhistle.eu/), an international project that developed an innovative training tool for whistleblowing education.
